Why Won’t They Make This Anymore?

The Newsroom

I have been watching this show again and was wondering. Why aren’t they making shows like this anymore? Sure you have some great shows out there. But, nothing that really makes you think… If only. If only real life, was more like this? Things would be a hell of a lot better. This show is more relevant today, than ever. This is the Newsroom.

The Newsroom was first aired on our screens in 2012. Written by Aaron Sorkin. The man who also brought us the West Wing. Another amazing political drama. This show is a political news drama, that ran for three seasons. You may have seen some of the scenes, floating around, on YouTube. Probably one of the most famous is from the first episode. “Can you say why is America the greatest country in the world?”

The show stars Jeff Daniels, who plays Will McAvoy. A news anchor who has lost himself, to make the viewers happy. Unknown to him, his friend and his boss Charlie Skinner, played by Sam Waterson. Concocts a plan to move Wills current staff and bring in a new crew to kick Will back into shape. The person he recruits is Mackenzie McHale, played by Emile Mortimer. Who takes the position of Executive producer. The problem? She’s the ex that cheated on him, a few years back. So fun times.

The show begins from there, trying to build a news show that will tell everyone the truth about what is going on in the world. Not to take side. Everyone is a target. But that, of course, doesn’t completely work and they screw up every now and then, well alot, especially season 2.

Over time the characters grow together and become a family. They are each well developed. Being allowed to make their own little impact in the series.

The other main characters are:

The rest of the cast. The B Team. Hold their own also and are not people they bring in, just because. Every one has a part to play and they play it well. Another part of the story is the news. The news they produce on the show is based on real events. Showing a different way the news should have been broadcasted and how it shouldn’t.

During the series the the big boss of the company comes down and has a moan and a barny with Charlie and the gang. This is Leona Lansing played by Jane Fonda. Fair enough she’s a bit older from her Barbarella days, but shes still got it. And she can kick some arse too.

The show ended in December of 2014. The fans have begged for Aaron to bring it back. There have been rumors galore. But sadly nothing concrete. The actors are all on board. So we will have to see. Maybe one day.

I truly love this show and would like you give it a go. This is a news political drama that sometimes is a comedy, a weird romance story and sometimes a bit nerdy with the facts, about politics, history and such. Which I do enjoy. They really should make these type of shows again.

It’s streaming at the moment on Amazon Prime, Google Play and YouTube. It’s also available on DVD and Blu ray.
