Stuff That I Have Watched

The Red Turtle by Studio Ghibli

I watched The Red Turtle mainly because I just love anything made by Studio Ghibli. Thay have done some amazing work with things like Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle. But after watching this film all I can think is, the character of the Red Turtle is… She’s an evil bitch! If you haven’t seen this film yet. There will be spoilers.

The film is visually pleasing and for a non verbal movie, the story is easy to follow and to understand. But you might not get the under lining story of kidnapping and stockholm syndrome.
The film starts with a man waking up on a desert island. He spends his time trying to escape the island by building rafts. But each time he attempts this, his rafts gets destroyed. He later finds out that a giant red turtle is the cause of this. He is, of course, pissed. Until one day he notices the turtle comes to shore. He “kills” the turtle by flipping the turtle on its back. The man after watching the turtle slowly “die”, starts to feel guilty for what he has done. Because of this the turtle transforms into a red headed woman. The woman convinces him, whilst unconscious and dehydrated. Not to leave the island and the man complies, letting his latest build fall to pieces, drifting out to sea.
The man and woman/turtle live a long life together. They have a child who eventually leaves with his turtle friends. Probably to start a band, smoke weed or eat pizza in a New York underground tunnel. The couple grow old together and eventually the man dies of old age. At this point the old woman transforms back into the red turtle and waddles back into the ocean, end credits.
It was at this point I think and said to myself. “You bitch!”

Don’t get me wrong, this is a good film. You understand the trials and tribulations the family go through. How the emotions are  portrayed by the characters. But then you see the whole thing could have been avoided if the turtle hadn’t been selfish and let the man go home. I don’t know if the turtle was lonely. It doesn’t excuse the fact that the turtle kept the man prisoner on the island, for decades. By manipulating his mental state, physically and emotionally.
I will let you decide for yourself. Watch the film, enjoy it.
