Amazons Clarkson’s Farm
I have just finished watching Jeremy Clarkson’s first season of his new show called Clarkson’s Farm. And to be frank, it’s brilliant.
The premise is that Jeremy bought a thousand acres, years ago. And was farmed by someone else. Until they decided that they wanted to retire. So Jeremy had two options: Sell up or try and have ago himself to farm the land and try and see what all this farming stuff is all about. Of course he knows nothing about farming. So, of course, he chose the later.
If anybody knows of Jeremy Clarkson from his previous work on Top Gear and The Grand Tour. Will know that he will constantly bite into more than he can chew. He will see a problem and in his “Genius” will find solutions for those problems even if those solutions are just terrible. But occasionally his ideas are indeed “genius” and from both sides create constant entertainment.
This show has Jeremy going at his best to find solutions with a whole collection of people that will bring him down a peg or two and set him down the right path, helping him create an adventure that not many people take a second thought about, in our daily lives. For example: where does our bread, beer, oil and vegetables all come from? What does a farmer actually do? The blood, sweat and tears that go into a job like farming.
Jeremy goes on a full tour of emotions during a year and a bit. Seeing how he deals with problems. Seeing the fullness of the man that is Jeremy Clarkson, who hasn’t got a clue. But that’s what makes him great.
To help him along his way he has a collection of people who provide help and advice in all stages of the world of farming.
The First person we meet is Charlie Ireland. He is there to help with the all the money and making sure he ticks all the boxes for decent produce. Dealing and helping with the paperwork. Making sure Jeremy follows all the government guidelines, health and safety laws. As much as Jeremy gets annoyed by him. Charlie creates a grounding source of reality for him. Keeping him in check from breaking the law.

Kaleb Cooper is the next person we meet and is younger than he looks. At the age of 23. He worked on the farm before the previous farmer retired and continues as a contractor for Jeremy. He is older in years in the way of farming but a child in the ways of world. Preferring to stay within the boundaries of the place of his birth. He is not afraid to tell Jeremy where to go and give him an earful when he fucks up. He is a sort of a surrogate brother and tries to make sure Jeremy stays of the right path. Even if sometimes it falls on deaf ears.

Whilst working on the farm. Jeremy decided that he wanted some sheep or “sheeps”. So he went and bought some. This is where we get to see Clarkson at his most vulnerable. Getting to love the animals he bought, then finding out that he had to send some to the abattoir. You see him visibly shaken by the whole ordeal. But doesn’t stop him enjoying an Sheppard’s pie later.
Ellen Helliwell is a Sheppardess that helps Jeremy with his sheep, guiding him through the ups and downs. Enjoying when Jeremy cocks up in many different ways. Teaching him what life is like looking after sheep. From herding to being a midwife. She is a 2016 NSA ( National Sheep Association) Ambassador. Promoting the next generation of people into farming.
Kevin Harrison is also on hand to help with the sheep on the farm. Handling medical issues and anything else that’s required. He is Chairman of SCOPS – Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep. English Committee Chairman of the NSA and Farm Manager for J T Baylis Farming. Apparently his a dab hand at the sax as well.
Gerald Cooper, is a man who has lived his life around farming, for over fifty years. He deals with the wall building and security around the farm and helps with the harvesting. He is a character who brings unusual joy to Jeremy. Even though Jeremy cannot understand what he is saying most of the time.
And finally Lisa Hogan. The better half of the Clarkson family. Who ends up helping with the running of the shop that Jeremy builds, Diddly Squat Farm. An actress who played a Sealion Keeper in the film Fierce Creatures in 1997. But now helps with running of the farm anyway she can. She also makes sculptures, her works are on show on her Instagram page.
Diddly Squat Farm Shop was built as one of the many ideas from Jeremy. And due to the popularity and influence of Mr. Clarkson, has been running well. And now with the release of the show it will only get bigger.
Jeremy also has a go at helping the local environment by creating spaces on his land to encourage the growth of the local wildlife and trying to bring back lost plant life. After many cock ups, he does a really great job.
If you get a chance, please set some time aside to watch this great show. It’s funny, entertaining and educational. And maybe a bit humbling to learn and understand the tough times that our farmers go through just to make a living. Maybe getting the appreciation they rightly deserve.
It’s available on Amazon Prime.
