Things I Bought #3

Highfire by Eoin Colfer

The man behind the Artemis Fowl series released a new novel in January 2020. That book is Highfire.

Set in the deep south. In the swamps of the Louisiana Bayou. Squib Moreau, a fifteen year old trying to get by with school and making money on the side to help his mother Elodie pay off debts left on them by ‘fake daddy’, who had done a runner. Also whilst fighting off the advances from the crooked Constable Regence Hooke. To Elodie not Squib. If you were confused.

After hiding and running from witnessing a murder to an island in the swamps. He meets the Vodka drinking Vern. A dragon, who has been hiding there for nearly a century. Vern aka Lord Highfire of the Highfire Eyrie has been hiding out away from the human race. Having had enough of angry mobs with torches. He spends his life monging out with Netflix and getting drunk in his Flashdance t-shirt. And also trying to stay king of the local wildlife.

All in all this a great little story. But be aware this book is for adults and with the blood and gore that comes with it. Which is a nice change of pace for an Eoin Colfer novel.

The book starts of a bit slow and then at a general pace in the middle and rushes at the end to finish up. I generally don’t like the rushes to the end because it sometimes feels that they were on a time limit or had run out of ideas. But this rushed ending sort of fits as there wasn’t much more to tell with the story.

The characters felt real and you could get behind the good guys and hate the bad guys. And this bad guy is a nasty little BEEEP! Eoin developed them really well. And with that the story flowed with them.

I don’t know if there is going to be a sequel to this book. But I would like to see a continuation of Squib and Vern. Building on what is great little story. It’s not amazing. But it is great.
