The Book
ACE, an imprint of Penguin Random House LLC. An American company. Published this book in 2026. At the same time, the UK company Michael Joseph published this book.
My copy is a first edition hardback and has 390 pages.
What Did I Think?
A colony has taken two hundred years to travel and set up on another world. Because of a massive setback, the cost was a generation of people. The colony has slowly continued to move along happily. They established a portal and a connection to Earth, and for a few years they communicated and made upgrades to each other.
All was going well until one day the giant robots appeared, and a corporation decided to destroy and kill the residents of the planet.
It turns out the big corporations have decided they want the planet and have set up a game. Gamers, from Earth, are able to purchase battle robots that they can use to decimate the land and local populace. They have been told the native population is a bunch of mutants and they have to do everything they can to win.
Meanwhile, the population- well, one farm is holding its own. They have something the corporation hoped didn’t exist anymore. A powerful AI called Roger is running the show. Roger was part of the original ship that brought them to the colony. Oliver’s grandfather worked with Roger to help organise and protect the farm just in case something like this happened.
Operation Bounce House has five days to have complete control of the planet.
Oliver, with his sister and close friends. Bring the remaining people of the planet together to help save what little survived the bombardment by the corporation Apex.
This story is nonstop. I know that Roger is constantly thinking and working on new ways to help the family and those around them. And the things being thought of are amazing. However, there isn’t a real moment at the beginning where the humans get a chance to catch up with themselves and accept what is going on. Roger gets them to do things nobody is ready to do and, with no training, somehow have the fighting force of a tiny militia.
It is helped by all of the technology they steal and reuse. But the pace is too fast.
Is This A Real Book?
While I was reading this book, I started to believe the author may have written it with AI. But I found that the author used our present reality as a joke. And the potential for future problems and how modern media is using it.
Two words that made me suspicious. Apex is a favourite in AI drama stories; the next one was Chen. I expected a cheap Toyota next, but that never appeared.
The story is okay, but the fast-paced action was relentless. Even the parts where you would expect a break were constant. I don’t know how anyone could deal with this. The only thing I could think of was: When all of the action had subsided. There is going to be a couple of generations of trauma to deal with, and the corporations will move on to the next planet.
This might be how Mr Dinniman wrote this book. Roger’s constantly thinking, working out solutions to the next problem and another fifty. Roger was able to create, to a point, immortality. At the start of the story, Roger was trying to figure out how to maintain the robot Bees, working on the farm.
Would I Recommend?
If you are after something a little different, a view of how AI could influence the future from a lot of different angles. Are you after a fast-paced action-adventure? Where every day there’s a chance you wouldn’t come out alive. Then this could be the book for you.
