The Book Report #114

Episode #113

Everyone Wants to be a Dark Lord Except Me by Django Wexler

The Book

Orbit first released and published this book in 2025. Orbit is an imprint of Little, Brown Book Group, which is part of the Hachette UK company.

My copy is a first-edition paperback and has 346 pages, including a content warning, previously what happened, acknowledgements, about the author, a chapter from another book, and an advertisement for the Orbit website.

I also used a digital copy when not at home.

What Did I Think?

Davi is back, and she is the new Dark Lord. She doesn’t want to be. However, it will be necessary if her plans are ever to be achieved.

She has no intention of destroying the humans. Her plan is simple: to make peace.

She hasn’t told the others yet, except for a select few she trusts more than most.

Davi and Tsav, her orc girlfriend, although she won’t admit to that. Head to the human kingdom in search of a way to fix everything.

But of course, the dark lords’ council mutinies against her wishes and, with her army, begin their march to destroy everyone who is not a Wilder.

Davi has to try to stay alive. She has been in what is typically a time loop, but it acts like a game save point. When she dies, she returns to a previous point in time, where she has to start from scratch again with all the memories of her previous lives.

This time around, she can’t really waste that sort of time by dying and has to deal with the realities that the people she has killed are actually dead now and will not ever come back. She cannot die again. So Davi goes through the mental anguish of the weight of it all.

Her mission is to save both communities and bring them together. And if time permits, try to find out how she came to be in this world and who is behind it all.

Grown Up

The sequel, even though it doesn’t have the shock and awe of the first story. This book seems to have matured. All the characters, in some way, have grown, even the newly introduced.

Davi continues with her narration of the story from her perspective, including notes at the bottom of the page. She leads us through all of her pain and anguish and plans, whether they are good or bad; it doesn’t matter. Davi will find a way, even if it kills her, to end her story and finally get some rest.

Even though certain parts might be obvious, there are still plenty of surprises that will leave you wanting more.

I am glad I was able to go on this journey.

Would I Recommend?

Yes, I would. This is another great book by Mr Wexler. And a conclusion that fits nicely and everyone would be happy with.

Please give this book a go.
